European History

The Bilkent University European history program aims to guide the student towards producing high-quality research work at the M.A. and Ph.D. level in one of several areas: dark-age studies; feudal studies; crusade studies; medieval religious orders and medieval education; the history of the Anglo-Norman and Angevin realms from the eleventh to the thirteenth century; late medieval Britain; narrative sources and historiography from early medieval Europe to early nineteenth-century Britain, and the history of social, political, religious, philosophical and economic thought from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth century, particularly in the British Isles. In order to acquire the skills needed to pursue research at graduate level, students are also taught Latin and, optionally, Middle English. As a prelude to specialization, we provide a broad background coverage to the main currents of European History in general and British History in particular from the decline of the Roman Empire to the nineteenth century.
