Ottoman History

The Bilkent University Ottoman history program offers courses on the foundation of the Ottoman State to twentieth-century modernity, with studies of the geographical area, including the Arab lands, the Balkans, and Türkiye. For graduate students interested in pursuing an academic or related career, the Department provides a program of study leading to the Ph.D. with all the necessary research tools, such as extensive courses on Ottoman Turkish proficiency, optional Western languages, the latest historical methodologies, and theoretical frameworks. The program welcomes students interested in all aspects of Ottoman History, and traditionally, in the program’s curriculum, a greater emphasis has been placed on the Ottoman world’s social, economic, and intellectual history.
